I stumbled into audio journalism in 2019.

As an undergrad, I studied under political economist and radio producer, Eddie Yuen. 4 years later, I was making radio myself.

In 2019, I interned at KPFA’s Pacifica Evening News as a local news reporter. Some of my clips are up on Soundcloud.

When I first started writing for broadcast, my scripts read poorly. I was not a skilled writer in school, but I had a desire to write better, and a community radio newsroom offered me an opportunity to level up. The assignments required all of my attention. Writing for radio sharpened my focus unlike any creative endeavor I had previously tackled.

When the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world, I lost all my income, and volunteering my labor to the radio station was an obvious choice at the time. I didn’t think I would make it my job. I just couldn’t think of a more dignified activity.

In 2020, I was invited by editor Lucy Kang to contribute to the collaborative storytelling series, Taken From Us. That experience brought me face to face with family members of victims of fatal incidents involving Bay Area law enforcement. The first of the interviews in that series was recorded at the height of the George Floyd uprising.

Those are still some of the most memorable interviews I have ever conducted.

From 2021 to 2023, I produced UpFront, KPFA’s flagship morning news magazine. It airs weekday mornings at 7 AM.

Against the advice of some of my colleagues, I am pursuing a graduate degree in journalism at UC Berkeley.

I previously performed technical roles in theatrical spaces and installed audio/video exhibits for museums. I once had a serious art practice. I taught ceramics. I still make art for therapeutic reasons.

I also have an interest in food systems and agriculture. I love to work with others outside. It’s what my ancestors did, and I feel connected to them when I do.
